So many people messaged on Instagram when I posted a story wishing my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teacher a Happy Birthday. I made a little Insta story of how I got to know Tom Showler- I had comments how the story was so lovely because it was the positive ways in which social media can connect people, some that watched loved the journey of me learning something new and hearing how it went (it is a permanent highlight so you can watch it in pictures)… Tom and I connected in social media because I had visited Pedro Bessa BJJ HQ where he trains and teaches and saw some posts about Yoga for BJJ and a Women’s BJJ class. He was my first ever Instagram friend and one day he showed up in real life!!! Because of that day when Tom and his wife dropped in to the yoga studio to say hi in person, and a whole series of other small signs, I began a side story away from Wild Wolf’s (at the time this was my world and even an afternoon away from the studio felt scary!). I was so supported by my Tom, I began to realise the worlds when two worlds collide that seem so different, you realise they are pretty connected and Tom delved pretty deep into his own side story with yoga at Wild Wolf’s…

Here is my instagram post from November 2018

‘Something unexpected happened for me yesterday and I still process it!  Within the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu I have explored the boundaries of myself and others in an endless puzzle of movement, a dance of strength and willingness to drop your ego (yes, I have been choked out with MY OWN ARM too many times in a row !!!)

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world is pretty new to me. I feel I step into a dense endless forest with unfamiliar paths and where I need to blaze new trails. The most precious thing for me, as a girl deep in the forest of yoga, is to be able to (attempt) to walk a new path. The ONLY reason that I have found my way is because of AMAZING people. These stoic types I am completely inspired by. And when we are inspired? We are in spirit. Somehow I have been spirited away into the world of BJJ, where stoicism still is a way to be, where friends can be found, heroes are plenty and you can challenge yourself.

Yesterday to get a blue belt? Well, I turned into the 6 year old me. The only other time I received something so unexpected was when I got a citizenship award for being the kindest girl in the year and generally a good citizen…. I got the same award a year later too and was totally humbled! This is a little more kick ass. I am humbled and in some ways don’t want to believe (I mean, when my sparring kit consists of lip gloss ) BUT when the most stoic man, Pedro Bessa, you have ever met tells you to believe, then you haven’t a choice Thank you to Bernie who was my first Bristol friend and at some point he encouraged me to start the BJJ journey. My teacher Tom Showler welcomed me with open arms, has held my hand and pushed me down new paths; he is one of my absolute favourite people In my world. His kindness is rich and real.. And the girls along the way that lift you up like Emily. Sharing things I am proud of or stepping into believing can be hard, but today I relish in a belt of colour and try not to feel too shy about sharing…’

This is just a little of the background (from my point of view) that has connected two worlds that is creating the new project, The Wild Box…

THE WILD BOX, so this project is born from a recent but pretty rich history, connecting two different worlds, that in many ways are not so different at all…

PUSH BOUNDARIES, COLOUR OUTSIDE THE LINES AND TAKE A COLLECTIVE BREATH.

From humble beginnings, great things come.
